Death Comes At Last
Pocahontas County Sun
Feb. 25, 1897After nearly a year of terrible suffering, and during which time life hung by a slender thread, Stephen F. Sturdivan passed away Wednesday noon. Few human beings were ever called upon to suffer more intense agony for a longer period than he has endured. The past two years a cancer appeared in his nose, and he tried every possible means and skill to get rid of it, but to no avail, it gradually grew worse and worse, spreading over his face and forehead and its roots digging deeper and deeper into his head till it seemed impossible for a living being to endure it longer, till yesterday when relief came in death.
Mr. Sturdivan was one of the first settlers in Laurens and the greater part of the time was engaged in farming and the livestock business, the latter of which was a big loss to him the past few years.
He leaves a wife and no children, only adopted ones.
He was an old soldier, having served nearly four years in the Federal Army.
The funeral will be held on Friday forenoon from the M.E. church.
