Charles F. Hawley, Laurens native, buried here Friday

Funeral services for Charles F. Hawley, 72, lifelong Laurens area resident who died Sept. 10 at Methodist hospital in Rochester, Minn., after, a long illness, were held Friday afternoon at the United Methodist. Church. The Rev. Mervin R. Nelson, pastor of the church, officiated.

Pall bearers were Fred Hawley, Dan Woodin, Bret Appleton, David Woodin, Charles Appleton and Kevin Dudley. Burial was in the Laurens Cemetery, with Hitchcock Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Hawley, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred K. Hawley, was born Feb. 10, 1902, at Laurens. He was a graduate of Ware High School and Cedar Rapids Business College, and was employed here by Standard Oil before joining his father as a member of the firm of Hawley Insurance Agency in 1933.

Mr. Hawley married Lela Jane Stover in 1922; she died in 1923. They were parents of one son, Leland J. Hawley.

On June 1, 1927, he was married to Leone Davidson at Laurens. They have two daughters, Mrs. Don (Gretchen) Woodin and Mrs. Jay (Jane) Appleton. A daughter,Wanda June, died in 1928.

Masonic Lodge

Mr. Hawley was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Des Moines Consistory, and was a past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a charter member and first president 'of the Laurens Lions Club; and served as president of the Laurens Chamber of Commerce and as chairman of the Laurens Community Chest. He served from 1934 to 1967 as treasurer of the Laurens Community School District.

He was secretary-treasurer of the Pocahontas Mutual Insurance Association from 1941 to 1968, and since that time had been chairman of the board. Since 1946 he had been a member of the board of directors of the IMT Insurance Company in Des Moines, and had served that company as treasurer since 1966. He was a past president of the Iowa Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Leland J . Hawley of Laurens; two daughters, Mrs. Don Woodin of Laurens and Mrs. Jay Appleton of Sedalia, Mo.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mrs. Martha Huddleston and a daughter, Wanda June.
