GEORGE ELLIOT THOMPSON

George Elliot Thompson was born June 22, 1826, in Center Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and departd this life Thursday, Aug. 20th, 1891. Age 65 years, 1 month, 28 days.

He was the son of George C. and Elizabeth (Davis) Thompson and was the sixth in a family of ten children consisting of five brothers and five sisters. His grand parents, John and Elisabeth (Crane) Thompson were of Scotch descent, born in the north of Ireland, and coming to this country some time previous to the Revolutionary war settled first in Westmorland Co., Pa., and afterward in Indiana Co. The subject of this sketch was married May 5th, 1853 to Miss Evaline Emma George, of Indiana Co. Pa., Dec. 21st, 1866; thirteen years after their marriage Mr. Thompson and family moved to Mercer Co., Ill., where they remained two years. In November 1869 they came to Dallas County, Iowa, and in September of 1870 to the 80 tract of virgin prairie situated three miles north west of Fonda that they have continued to occupy and improve. This residence of nearly twenty one years indicates that the deceased was one of the first to make a permanent settlement in the vicinity of Fonda or Marvin as it was then called. The deceased was the father of seven children all of whom together with their mother are still living, namely, Cyras I. at home, Elisabeth Frances, wife of J.A. Sayre, of Buena Vista Co., George Porter, marrying to Alice Bliss, Thayer Co., Neb.; Harry C., married to Eugene Gobill, of Atchison, Kan., James W., Hill City, S. Dakota, John A. and Mary E. wife of Leslie Dean, at home. One of the most noticable traits of the deceased was his love of home and tender regard for the welfare and comfort of his wife and family. It was a source of great pleasure to him during the last year that he was permitted to witness and aid in the erection of the large and handsome mansion that now adorns the site of their first prairie home. The funeral services were conducted at his late residence by the Rev. R.E. Flickinger, and his remains laid to rest in the Fonda Cemetery.
