Elroy Stanely Runneberg was born on December 19, 1902 at Hinsdale, Illinois. He was the son of Andrew and Belinda (Pearson) Runneberg. In 1905, his family moved to the Mallard area. Elroy was educated at Cummins Township #2 School and graduated from Mallard High School in 1921. After he completed his education, he farmed on the family farm. On September 21, 1934, Elroy married Ila C. Scrogum at McGregor, Iowa. The couple farmed southwest of Mallard until 1991 when they moved to Laurens. They entered the Good Samaritan Cener in 1992. Ila died on February 26, 1994.

Elroy was a member of the United Methodist Church, having been chairman of the church Council and the Finance board. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and was on the membership board of the Farm Bureau. He collected for the community Chest and sold War Bonds during World War II. Elroy enjoyed traveling, gardening, and working around the farm in his spare time.

Survivors include his son: Charles (Roberta) Runneberg of Madrid, Iowa; Daughter: Marian Runneberg of Chicago, Il.; granddaughters: Lisa (Russell) Herrstrom and Lori Runneberg; great-grandson: Travis Herrstrom all of Madrid, and a Brother, Albert (Teddy) Runneberg of Mallard.

Elroy was preceded in death by his wife, Ila and sister, Blanche Atkinson.

Honorary casket bearers were: Howard Perry, Paul Crotty. Lyman Bailey, and Bill Baxter.

Casket bearers were: Jerry Runneberg, Luverne Runneberg, Tom Perry, Jim Perry, Ray Reinders, and Lee Bailey.

Interment was in the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens, Iowa.
