Obituary of Michael Knewel 1824-1916

Michael Knewel, a well-known and one of the oldest residents of the county, died last Wednesday, Feb. 9th, in the home of his daughter, Mrs John P. Arens [Elizabeth], north of Remsen. His Death was due to old age, his age being ninety-one years. Mr.Knewel for many years was a resident of this section of the country, and for several years of late made his home in the Hoffmann House here, where the best of attention was given him in his old days. Later he was removed to the Arens home where he resided until his death. He was born in Luxemburg, where he was married, and with his family came to this country over forty years ago. First he settled in Jackson county, and after a short time came to Plymouth county, homesteading in Fredonia township. His wife preceded him to the grave thirty years ago, and three sons also have passed away. The remaining children are four daughters, as follows: Mrs. John P. Arens [Elizabeth] of Remsen, Mrs. John Stoos [Johanna] and Mrs. Nick Stoos [Kathrine] of Alton, and Mrs. John Ludwigs [Nancy] of LaMotte, Iowa. The Funeral was held last Saturday, services being conducted by Rev. Father Schulte in St. Mary's Church here. Internm.ent was made in the St. Mary cemetery.
