Charlie Eufers' car slams tree after a fatal heart attack

Charles G. Eufers, 65, of 301 Third Ave. NW, died late Monday afternoon after a heart attack while driving his car just east of Le Mars on highway 3.

Mr. Eufers was driving a 1966 Mercury westbound on highway 3 when the car swerved out of control and into the north ditch, police report. The vehicle then came back up onto the highway and across into the south ditch near the Plymouth County home. The vehicle struck a tree in the south ditch.

Mr. Eufers was taken to Floyd Valley hospital by Luken-Johnson ambulance where he was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later. Plymouth county coroner Dr. S. H. Lindell reported death was caused by a heart attack.

The car in which Mr. Eufers was driving was estimated a total loss. Police patrolman Randy Hazel investigated.

Funeral services for Mr. Eufers will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic church with Rev. George Mc Fadden officiating.

The burial will be in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the Luken-Johnson funeral home. Parish rosary will be recited Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Eufers' death was unexpected.

He was a lifelong Le Mars resident and had retired last July after being employed for 20 years by Plymouth County.

Charles G. Eufers was born July 21, 1907, in Le Mars, the son of the late Nick and Matilda (Heinrich) Eufers. He was married Jan. 20, 1934, at Oyens to Justine Bruscher.

Mr. Eufers was a member of St. James Catholic church and Eagle s club in Le Mars. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.

Survivors are his wife Justine of Le Mars; two sons, Nick of Spokane, Wash., and Charles Jr. of Le Mars; a daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Darlene) Kunkel of Remsen; three sisters, Josephine Eufers of Le Mars, Mrs. Henry (Anna) Ballman of Waterloo and Mrs. Helen Paskert of Le Mars and eight grandchildren.
