Rome Hentges was early day clothier

Rome F. Hentges, 85, pioneer and lifelong resident of Le Mars, died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 1978) at Floyd Valley hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born May 29, 1893, to John and Mary Berg Hentges. After graduating in 1913 from Le Mars schools, he attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and studied at George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

Mr. Hentges served in the army overseas in Paris and Trear, Germany, as an interpreter during world war 1.

He and his brothers were in the retail men’s clothing business in Le Mars for many years. The business was later sold to Bowers and continues to this date in the same downtown location.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic church, Le Mars, with Rev. Francis Staber officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery under direction of the Luedtke funeral home.

Parish rosary will be at 8 p.m. Thursday and Knights of Columbus rosary at 8:30 at the funeral home.

Survivors are a son, Dr. David Hentges, Columbia, Mo.; a daughter Mrs. Jerry (Gloria) Targun of Glencoe, Ill., and a sister, Clementine Hentges, Le Mars.

One of a family of 11 children, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Ed, Steven, Leonard, Frank, John and Joseph and by three sisters, Celia, Clara and Mrs. Elizabeth Hoffmann.
