Stephen Hentges Popular Business Man Succumbs

Life Long Resident of Le Mars Dies Following A Long Illness

Alderman First Ward

Last Rites Held Thursday Are Largely Attended

Expressions of regret were heard in business places, office and on the street when word of the death of Steve Hentges, life long resident of Le Mars, was circulated Tuesday morning.

Mr. Hentges died at his home, 11 Third Avenue SE, in the house where he was born May 25, 1885, fifty-one years ago.

Mr. Hentges had been ailing in health more or less the past four years, though able some of the time to attend to his business and to his duties as alderman from the First Ward. Operations for a serious internal malady failed to restore his health.

Stephen T. Hentges, member of one of the first families settling in Le Mars, spent his youth in the prairie village and as years went along did his share in helping to make Le Mars attain its present standing as a live modern city.

He attended St. Joseph school and the Le Mars city school and completed a course at St. Mary’s College, Kansas. On leaving college he worked in the Le Mars Savings bank for a few years and then went to Yankton, S.D. where he managed the clothing store operated among stores in other cities by the Hentges Clothing company.

Returns to Le Mars

Returning to Le Mars he assisted in the home store. He was serving his second term as a member of the city council. Mr. Hentges showed keen interest in civic problems and was a valuable coadjutor as long as health permitted. He was since in his efforts to represent the people for the best interests of the city.

Gifted with a pleasing personality, and regardful of the rights of others, he gained popularity and was esteemed and liked in all walks of life. Mr. Hentges was a member of the Le Mars Eagles.

He leaves six brothers and four sisters, Edward J. Hentges, Frank C., Joseph V. and Roman F., of Le Mar; John and Leonard M. Hentges of Redlands, Cal.; Mrs. D. N Hoffman, Misses Cecelia, Clara and Clementine Hentges, of Le Mars

Funeral Thursday Morning

Testifying to the esteem in which his memory is held, a large number gathered at St. Joseph church Thursday morning to attend the last rites. Mgr. J. D. Fisch officiated at the mass. Pallbearers were: H. Grimjes, H. F. Groetken, J. E. Kelley, J. J. Kemp, J. G. Koenig and W. K. Veale.
