Note: Her maiden name is Cordes and one Family Tree source has her year of birth 1849 and her mother's maiden name as Schultz and some have her first name listed as Marie.

County Settler Attains Age of 79 Years –Funeral Is Held Today

Mary Furcher, 79 years, three months and 12 days of age, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lou Collman, in Preston township, Friday.

The funeral was held today from the Grant township church and burial was made in the Lutheran cemetery.

Mrs. Furchner was born on May 5, 1849, in Germany and came to this country 58 years ago. She has been a resident of this county for the last 20 years. Her husband preceded her in death.

Was a Member of the Eastern Star Many Years

Mrs. Mary Furchner died at noon, Friday, August 17, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louis Collmann, of Preston township with whom she made her home the last twenty years. She was the daughter of John and Sophia Cordes, born in Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany, May 5, 1849.

At the age of twenty she came to America with her parents and settled at Mauch Chunk, Penn. There she was married to August Furchner and they came to Plymouth county, 53 years ago. To this union were born ten children of whom seven survive. They are: August, of Bethlehem, Pa., Mrs. Mary Edwards, Craig, Ia., Nick of Longview, Wash.; Mrs. Louis Collmann, Ireton, Ia., Will, of Blackfoot, Ida.; Mrs. C. F. Riter, Sioux Falls, S. D.; Fred of Grant’s Pass, Ore. There are also twenty three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

An only brother died a number of years ago.

Last spring she suffered a general breakdown in health and had been failing rapidly since.

Mrs. Furchner was widely known among pioneers of the county and held in esteem by a large circle of friends. She has been a member of the Eastern Star for many years and an attendant of the Lutheran church.
