KILLED WHEN CAR OVERTURNS
Craig Man Is Victim of Accident While Returning from Sioux Falls
CAUSE IS CONJECTURAL
Webb Edwards Was Widely Known and Popular
Webb Edwards, aged 51, a paper hanger resident at Craig, was instantly killed Monday night when the car he was driving turned over at a cross road three miles north of that place, while Mr. Edwards was returning from a trip to Sioux Falls.
Henry Perebom and R. Richardson, farmers living near the place where the fatal accident took place, found the body and the wrecked car, hearing the crash. It is not known how the accident occurred, although from appearances the car must have turned over several times. The face of the dead man was badly crushed and also the breast bone and his left arm were broken.
The body was taken to Ireton to an undertaker and later to his home in Craig. Shortly before the body was found Mr. Edwards had called on and visited with the Grau family north of Ireton, and also talked with acquaintances in Ireton. The accident happened between Ireton and Craig, about 9 o’clock, at a point where there was a slight depression in the road.
His wife was visiting friends at Remsen at the time and received a terrible shock on being informed of the tragedy by telephone. She left immediately for her home, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Lucas and Mrs. G. A. Null, of Remsen.
Inspection of the wrecked car and the scene of the accident led to the belief that Mr. Edwards had been passed by another machine and that he was crowed off the road. Marks along the highway show that his car turned over three times, and that Mr. Edwards had applied the brakes in an effort to avoid the crash. His body was almost unrecognizable, and it is thought he died instantly.
Mr. Edwards was fifty-one years old and was born in Wisconsin. When he was a boy his parents came to this part of Iowa and were early settlers in Sioux county. He was married to Miss Mary Furchner, of this place and for many years they lived in Struble and for the past thirteen years in Craig, where he was engaged in business.
Mr. Edwards was well known in Plymouth and Sioux counties. For many years he took a keen interest in baseball and at one time was manager of the Struble Canaries, when the town of Struble supported one of the strongest amateur teams in northwestern Iowa. He was highly popular, a good business man, a devoted husband and father, and enjoyed the high esteem of a large circle of friends throughout the county, and was active in community affairs.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. A. Hutton and three grandchildren, of Craig. He is also survived by his brothers, Henry Edwards, of Perry, Okla.; Thomas, living in Montana and a half-brother, Geo. Bond, of Oaks, N. D. He was a cousin of John Edwards, of this city. The funeral will be held from the home at Craig today and services held at Ireton where interment will be made.
