AGNES EYRES HELD WAS FORMER PLYMOUTH COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT

Agnes Mary Eyres Held, 90, Buffalo, Minn., LeMars native and former longtime Hinton area resident, died Sept. 29, 1982, at Buffalo after a brief illness.

She moved to Buffalo 10 years ago to be near a son and family, Dr. Stanley Held.

Funeral services were Monday at 2 p.m. at the Hinton United Methodist church with Rev. Dale Stone officiating. Burial was in Merrill Melbourne cemetery under direction of the Nelson-Berger Northside chapel, Sioux City.

A prayer service was held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel. A worship service was held Friday evening at the Peterson funeral home in Buffalo.

Agnes Eyres was born June 14, 1892, in LeMars to Thomas and Christina Watson Eyres. She graduated from LeMars high school and Coe college at Cedar Rapids. She taught school at Ocheyedan, Eldora and Sioux City.

Her marriage to George Edward (G.E.) Held took place March 8, 1922, in Plymouth County. He died Nov. 27, 1966.

She held the position of Plymouth County Superintendent of Schools from 1919 to 1922 and was a member of the Plymouth County school board for 30 years. She also served as president of the Hinton school board.

Mrs. Held was a dedicated member and officer of the Hinton garden club, Farm Bureau Federation and Federated Women’s Club for many years. She was also active in church work at the Hinton United Methodist church whee she was a WSCS member, serving as president and various other offices.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Calvin Eyres, Roderick Eyres, Dr. Thomas Eyres, and Dr. Philip Eyres.

Survivors are two sons, Thomas Held, Hinton; Dr. Stanley Held, Buffalo, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. George (Catherine) Shores, Columbus, Ind.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three sisters, Harriet Eyres, Ethel Eyres, and Helen Eyres Wilson, all of Washington, D.C.
