Note: Her first name is spelled Kathryn on her gravestone. Her mother's maiden name is Taylor.

Little Girl Is Fatally Hurt In Explosion

Katherine Funk, Aged 7, Succumbs To Burns Within a Few Hours

Mother Is In Hospital

Makes Desperate Efforts To Save Her Child

Katherine Funk, 7 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Funk, living on the Chris Adler farm three miles east of Le Mars, died at he Sacred Heart Hospital, Monday morning, from burns she sustained when a pan of hot water containing gasoline and floor waxing preparation, place on a stove exploded.

Mrs. Funk mother of the child, was severely burned in an attempt to save the child and is a patient in the hospital, suffering from burns on both arms from the top of the shoulder to the tips of the fingers and on her cheek. Physicians in attendance reported yesterday that she is progressing favorably.

The accident happened during the forenoon Sunday at the farm home. When the explosion occurred Mrs. Funk grabbed the flaming vessel, and some of he contents were spilled on the child who was standing near her mother. The child's clothing was ignited and she was burned from head to foot before the flames were extinguished. Medical aid was summoned and the mother and child rushed to the hospital.

Came Here Recently

Mr. and Mrs. Funk came to Plymouth County two years ago. Katherine was born at Tyler, Minnesota, November 6, 1927.

Her death is mourned by her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Funk, her brother, Floyd, and three sisters, Emma, Louis, and Bernice, her grandmother, Mrs. Theo. Bornhoff, Pierre, S. D., and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Funk, of Bronson, Iowa.

Funeral on Wednesday

The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in St. John's Evangelical Church in this city, Rev. John Perl officiating. Members of the Sunday school class will be pallbearers.
