Edith Masuen, 92, a Le Mars native and lifelong Plymouth County resident, died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars following a brief illness.

The former Edith Trafford, she was born Jan. 6, 1905, in Le Mars, the daughter of Harry and Otillia (Szitnick) Trafford. She was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Central High School. For several years she was employed as a telephone operator for Central Telephone Co. in Le Mars. She married Lawrence Masuen on Jan. 4, 1934 at Yankton, S.D. Following their marriage the couple resided in Oyens for several years before moving to Le Mars in the early 1940s. Since then they made their home in Le Mars.

For a number of years during the 1940s and 1950s she had worked at Club Debonair as a cook. Later she was employed at the Gehlen Catholic Schools cafeteria as their baker. Mr. Masuen died Nov. 21, 1975.

Mrs. Masuen continued to live in her own home until two years ago when she moved into Floyd Valley Apartments. Since suffering a stroke in January, 1997, she had been a resident at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Christian Mothers Society.

She was an avid quilter and enjoyed handiwork, especially crocheting. She loved flowers and gardening and enjoyed traveling with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Pat Ruba and her husband, Jerry of Sergeant Bluffs; two sons, Denny Masuen and his wife, Pat, and Roger Masuen, all of Le Mars; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Haack of Remsen.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Emma and two sisters in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Jerry Cosgrove officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.
