Came to America When a Young Man and Subsequently Settled in Illinois and Later Came to Plymouth County-Was Successful Farmer.

John Sheehan died at his residence, 415 West Fifth street, on Tuesday morning at three o'clock after a few days illness. A week ago Sunday he suffered a stroke and gradually grew worse, and on last Sunday his condition became serious and he passed away on Tuesday.

He was conscious to the end and passed away consoled by the ministrations of the church and surrounded by his family whom he bade an affectionate farewell. Mr. Sheehan had been a sufferer from stomach trouble for some years ,although able to be around and attend to his daily avocations.

John Sheehan was a native of Ireland and was born in County Kerry on June 20, 1844, where he grew to manhood. When twenty-six years of age he left his home and sought employment in America and worked in various places.

In 1877 he settled La Salle county, Illinois, and engaged in farming on his own account. While residing there he was united in marriage with Johanna Fahey, who has been a true and faithful consort to him.

In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Sheehan came to Plymouth county and settled on a farm in Marion township where they lived until 1913, when they retired from active farm life and bought a home in Le Mars.

To their union nine children were born, who with the mother, mourn the loss of a good father. They are John, George, Thomas, James, Joseph, Mrs. T. J. Considine, Mrs. W. T. Davies, Mrs.R. A. Manning, all residing in Le Mars and vicinity, and Mrs. Theo. Watry, of Adrian, Minn.

John Sheehan was a citizen of sterling worth, frugal, industrious, and an extraordinarily active worker. He toiled incessantly when on the farm to gain a competence and provide for his large family in whom he took great pride. He was a man of fine impulses, a good neighbor and a staunch friend. His rough exterior covered a warm heart. He was brought up in the school of hard knocks and appreciated and made good use of the opportunities he found afforded in the growing west, by honest dealing and self denial coupled with unflagging industry, attained a good measure of success.

Mr. Sheehan was a devout member of the Catholic church and was a member of Trinity Council, Knights of Columbus.

The funeral was held yesterday morning at St. James church, Rev. Father O'Farrell officiating, and was largely attended by old friends and neighbors. The Knights of Columbus attended the funeral in a body.
