Mrs. Russell F. (Gertrude M.) Deertz, 67, Akron, died Wednesday (May 18, 1983) in St. Luke's regional medical center in Sioux City.

Graveside committal services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park cemetery in Mason City. The Rev. Charles Q. Qallace, pastor of the First United Methodist church, Mason City officiated. Burial was under direction of the Major Erickson funeral home.

Mrs. Deertz was born Nov. 29, 1915, in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Harrison and Pearl Moniger Nelson. She graduated from Eagle Grove high school in 1933 and married Ted Cupiss on Feb. 2, 1937, in Chicago. He died in 1958. She married Russell F. Deertz March 16, 1971 at West Des Moines, and they moved to Akron in July 1978. She was employed as Chicago office manager of American Calculation and Typing Service for a number of years. In 1965, she moved to Des Moines where she worked for Thomas Edison Insurance Co., later known as North American Life and Casualty Co. as manager of the Des Moines branch. She retired in 1976.

She is survived by her husband, Russell, Akron; two sisters, Mrs. Wendell (Helen) Snow of Akron and Mrs. Frances Hoefle of Le Mars and one brother, Orvin Nelson, River Grove, III.
