Charles H. Mammen Dead At Age 83--Was Retired Farmer
Funeral Set Tuesday In Grant Township
Charles H. Mammen, 83, 517 Ply. St NW, died Friday at Sacred Heart Hospital where he had been hospitalized one day. He had been ill since Feb. 10.
A well known Grant township retired farmer, Mr. Mammen had gained the unofficial title of Plymouth county poet laureate. Numerous weddings and anniversary events were highlighted with Mr. Mammen reading an original poem about the occasion. County newspapers also published his poetry recording community wide affairs.
Prayer service will be held at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at Mauer's funeral home, with the funeral service set at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran church in Grant township. Rev. B. Nagel will officiate. Interment will be in the Grant township cemetery.
Mr. Mammen was born Nov. 27, 1977, in Whiteside county, Ill., and came to Plymouth county in 1884. He farmed in Grant township until retiring to LeMars in 1942.He was a member of Christ Lutheran church and Brotherhood in Grant Township and formerly was active in many Community affairs.
His marriage to Anna Borchers took place March 4, 1904, in Preston township. She died in 1952. He also was preceded in death by four brothers and his parents, Claus and Johanna Landherr Mammen.
Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Elmer, Mrs. William (Alice) Kruse, Mrs. Marvin (Minnie) Doering and Carl, all of LeMars; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers, William S. Mammen of Los Angeles and J. H. Mammen of Billings, Mont., and three sisters, Mrs. Otto Vollmar of LeMars, Mrs. Margaret Snyder and Mrs. Katherine Wilken both of Los Angeles.
