DEATH SUMMONS WESTFIELD MAN LAST THURSDAY
Last Rites for W. M. Welch, Sr., Held Saturday Morning, April 24th
Wm. M. Welch, Sr., an early settler and esteemed citizen of this community, passed peacefully away at his, home, two miles east of Westfield, Iowa, Thursday morning, April 22, 1937, at about 8:20 a. in., aged 72 years, 5 months and 7 days. He had been in fairly good health until six weeks ago, when he had a bad heart attack; but regained his strength and was up and around until six days before his death, when he became ill with the flu, and, in spite of the best of medical care, pneumonia set in and he peacefully passed away.
William M. Welch, Sr., the youngest son of John and Bridget Welch, was born November 15, 1864, at Greeley, Iowa,. Mr. Welch was a resident of Plymouth county for fifty-one years, and the oldest settler of Westfield township. In the spring of 1886 he came to Westfield and took up farming with his brother, Edward, who was already here. On January 10, 1897, he was united in marriage with with Elizabeth Foley. Eight children came to bless their union, a son, Joseph, preceding his father in death in infancy.
Mr. Welch is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and seven children J. Francis, Emmet B., William L., of Akron, Iowa; Jesse V., Raymond P., Ella R. Claassen and Robert of Westfield, Iowa; also by five grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Scanlon, of St. Louis, Mo.
The relatives have the sincere sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
Mr. Welch was a faithful, devoted; member of St. Catharine's Catholic church at Westfield, Iowa. His quiet, unassuming manner won him many friends, and he will be greatly, missed by all that came in contact with him
Funeral services were held Saturday-morning, April 24, at 9:30 O'clock, in St. Patrick's Catholic church, Akron Rev. Father Chas. Ernst officiating. His six sons acting as pallbearers, he was laid to rest in Mt. Calvary cemetery, Akron.
The relatives in attendance at the last rites from away were: Wm. and John. Welch, of Sheldon, Iowa; James Welch, of Jeffers,. Minn. ; Mr. and Mrs. John Welch, of Hudson, S. D.; Dr. and Mrs. Dan Welch and son, of Dell Rapids, S. D.; Mrs. Mary Welch, Blunt, S. D,; Mrs. Edward Burns, Mrs. Marie Jourlin, Mrs. Ella Eilers, Mrs. Margaret Lieberts and daughter, all of Brookings, S. D.; James Foley, of Eagle Luke, Minn.
