ESTEEMED UNION COUNTY WOMAN IS CALLED BY DEATH
Last Rites Are Held Tuesday Afternoon For Mrs. Otis Maynard

Mrs. Otis Maynard, a well-known and esteemed resident of Union county, South Dakota, west of town, passed away at the Akron Community Hospital, Saturday, September 3, 1955, after a long and painful illness, aged 76 years, 4 months and 15 days.

Charlotte [Lottie] Irenia Sayles, daughter of William and Irenia Sayles, was born April 19, 1879, in Union County, S.D. [then Dakota Territory], on their pioneer homestead. There she attended a rural school and was a student at the University of South Dakota for two years. On April 24, 1901, she married Otis [Rollo] Maynard and they made their home on his farm located two and a half miles southeast of Westfield, Iowa, until the spring of 1908, when they moved to their present home in Union county. To this union were born three children -- a son and two daughters.

She was a member of the Wesley Methodist church of Akron and Vesper Chapter, No. 61, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Maynard always took an interest in the activities in the community, holding various offices in the Richland [S.D.] W.S.C.S. and Lakeview Extension Club, and also was a charter member of the Country Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Maynard celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1951.

A woman of genial nature and great courage, she will be missed by a host of friends. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Porter [Rueben] Maynard, of Akron, IA [rural Union county, SD]; two daughters, Mrs. C.A. [Anita Maynard] Brady, of Pomona, Calif., and Mrs. Price [Viola Maynard] Miller, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a sister, Miss Hattie [Harriet] Sayles, of Akron, Iowa; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Wesley Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Chester Guinn. Mrs. Esther Ferguson sang a solo, and there were selections by a quartet comprised of Mrs. Mary Lundberg, Mrs. Birdice Kerr, Karl Silkebakken and H.B. Nelson. Mrs. H.B. Nelson was pianist. The grave side rites at Riverside cemetery [Akron, Plymouth Co. Iowa] were in charge of Vesper Chapter, O.E.S.
