Joseph McCorkell was born July 28,1835, in Paisley, Scotland, and died at his home in Akron, Iowa, Thursday, February 18, 1909, after a long illness, of paralysis and complications, aged 73 years, 6 months and 21 days. He came to the United States at the age of eighteen and first located in Dubuque,Iowa, thus being a resident of this state for more than fifty years. He married Mary J. Moore fifty-one years ago, who remained his devotee, helpmate and companion until his taking away. They lived for a number of years in Dallas county, near DesMoines. In 1881 the family came to Plymouth county. He homesteaded the northeast quarter of Section 13, Portland township. Early in life Mr. McCorkell followed the carpenter trade, being a contractor and builder; but he later engaged, in farming and continued it until eleven years ago, when he retired from its active duties and moved his family to Akron, which has since remained their home. A man of exceptional fineness of character, he was a valued friend and neighbor and a devoted husband and father. He wrought well and faithfully the affairs of this life. Besides the bereaved wife, he is survived by five sons and two daughters—Robert,of Medical Lake, Washington; Howard, Joseph L. and Elliott, of this vicinity; Walter, of Sioux City; Mrs. Wm. Hyink, of Alton, Iowa, and Miss Lizzie, at home, the latter being a constant and faithful attendant of her father during his long period of illness. The community, in the loss of one of its oldest and most respected citizens, tenders its condolence to the sorrowing family.

Preceding the funeral at the Bapist church last Saturday afternoon, a brief service was held at the home. The services were largely attended,
Rev. J. L. Ayrault delivered the sermon. Interment was made in Riverside
cemetery.
