Lena "Penny" S. Burns, 84, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at a care facility in Le Mars, Iowa, after a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Calvary Episcopal Church in Sioux City, with Deacon Pat Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery at Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Lena was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Clearwater, Kan., the daughter of Walter and Laura (Houpt) Loger. She was raised and attended school in Clearwater. She came to Sioux City in 1945 and had been a resident here ever since.

She was united in marriage to Tommy Burns in South Dakota. He passed away on Feb. 19, 2002. Lena was a bookkeeper and receptionist for her husband's business, Tommy's Radio & TV Repair Services.

She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church. She was involved in the Vestory Committee, Altar Guild and also sewed many vestments and altar linens. Lena enjoyed sewing, orchids and raising exceptional flowers and garden beds. She also helped her husband restore old horsedrawn buggies as well as participating in many parades in the area. She also wrote and published a family history book.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly and her husband, Herman Bremer of Le Mars, Iowa; a stepson, Thomas and his wife, Donna Lorenzen of Hawarden, Iowa; a granddaughter, Laura and her husband, Rob Roush of Norwalk, Iowa; eight step grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Skinner of Canton, S.D.; a brother-in-law, Hubert Sanders of Derby, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Laura Loger; her husband, Thomas "Tommy" Burns; two sisters, Edith Viggiano and Edna Sander; and two brothers-in-law, Sal Viggiano and Russell Skinner.
