Dorothy May Keizer was born May 17, 1913 on the family farm in Sioux County, Iowa near Alton, Iowa to Peter and Tracy (Sorgdrager) Keizer. Dorothy attended and graduated from Alton High School in 1930. Following high school, Dorothy taught country school for a few years. Dorothy was united in marriage to Marshall Rees on January 1, 1934. She and Marshall had four children: Donna, Marilyn, Sherry, and Claude. The couple farmed for over 65 years East of Seney, Iowa. She worked for Hollander’s Department Store and later went to work for Hotopp Jewelry Store in Le Mars for over 25 years.
Marshall passed away on January 15, 2000. Dorothy continued to live on the farm until 2005 when she moved to Prime Living Apartments and in 2006 she moved to Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen.
Dorothy was a longtime member of the Seney United Methodist Church where she was the pianist for many years. She had served as Secretary for the United Methodist District Conference for several years. She enjoyed singing with the Sweet Adeline’s, embroidering, and quilting. She had made a quilt for each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved family gatherings at the farm; especially watching the children develop their path to adulthood. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends.
She is survived by her 4 children: Donna (Neil) Detrick of Gun Barrel City, TX, Marilyn Wingert of Le Mars, Sherry (Jim) Rees-Campbell of Grand Haven, MI, and Claude (Gracia) Rees of Greenfield, IA; 10 grandchildren: Kurt (Deb) Detrick, Lynne Detrick, Michelle (Marty) Morehead, Teresa (Scott) Vogelaar, Elizabeth (Keith) Lurvey, Deborah Wingert, Dan (Susan) Campbell, Judi Campbell, Michelle (Ron) Klein, and Scott (Seiko) Rees; 18 great grandchildren: Kirsten Detrick, Adam Detrick, Alexandra Detrick, Kory Morehead, Lauren Morehead, Tyler Gengler, Thomas John Gengler, Tiffany Gengler, Kimberly Wingert, Devin Stark, Heather Lurvey, Jacob Lurvey, Ashley (Toby) Liedel, Andrew Campbell, Sean Klein, Nathan Klein, Shayla Rees, and Justin Rees; 4 great great grandchildren: Emma Gengler, Samantha Gengler, Tayden Gengler, and Tanner Gengler; a brother, Lewis (Fern) Keizer of Yankton, SD; and a special friend, Phyliss Masters.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marshall; her parents; a sister, Ethel (Jerry) Noack; a niece, LoRae (Noack) Craun; her mother-in-law, Lena Rees; several cousins; and many friends.
The family appreciated the loving care given to Dorothy by the staff of the Memory Unit at Happy Siesta Nursing Home and the caregivers of Hospice of Siouxland during her final days.
