Le Mars

Elaine F. (Arens) McKown, 85, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away peacefully Sunday, December 26, 2010 at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Le Mars, following a brief illness with cancer of the esophagus.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Reverend Kevin Richter will celebrate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2010, with a Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m., and Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Pallbearers will be Gary Herman, Shane Herman, Robert Dokken, Dan Colling, Rusty Price and Dave Arens. Honorary Pallbearers will be Patricia Downs, Jalenah Blake and Kelly Willis.

Elaine F. Arens was born February 17, 1925 in Remsen, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Schiltz) Arens. She attended school in Le Mars and graduated from Central High School in 1943.

She was united in marriage to George B. McKown on October 22, 1943. Following their marriage, the couple lived in many locations while George was serving in the military. Through the years, Elaine did secretarial work for many businesses. George passed away in 1957.

In September of 1993, she moved back to Le Mars, to be near her family. She was happy to be back with her family and friends. Elaine was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch. She also enjoyed reading and a good game of bingo.

Survivors include her 3 children: Harry McKown of Le Mars, Iowa, Barbara (McKown) Macomber of Aurora, Colorado, and Donna (Jim) Harlan of Le Mars, IA; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Reynolds of Sergeant Bluff, IA; 10 grandchildren: Anitra Goodbar, Patricia Downs, Jason McKown, Shawn McKown, Kelly Willis, Sharon (Ken) Shively, Denise (Brent) Lenz, Aaron O’Connor, Robert Dokken, and Steven Lenz; 6 great grandchildren: Drayven Skipple, Noelle Newby, Autumn Newby, Taylor Newby, Amethyst Schmitz, and Jalenah Blake; 1 great great grandchild: Omar Romero and one more on the way; 3 sisters: Ruth Colling of Remsen, IA, Janet Langholdt of Le Mars, IA, and Anita Zimmer of Littleton, Colorado; four brothers: Floyd Arens of Grass Valley, CA, Marty (Donna) Arens, Jim Arens, and Tom (Marlene) Arens all of Le Mars, IA; and a sister in law: Marietta (Kenneth) Alesch of Remsen, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George B. McKown; a son: George D. McKown; a daughter: Ardith Dunam; 2 brothers: Clyde Arens and Bob Arens; 3 brothers in law: Ray Colling, Clarence Langholdt, and Vincent Zimmer; a sister: Betty Price; and 2 sisters-in-law: Lois Ann Arens and Betty Jo Arens; and a great grandson, Daniel Shively.
