Dorothy Meis, 88, of Arvada, Colo., and formerly of Le Mars, died unexpectedly from heart failure Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at Exempla Lutheran Hospital in Arvada, Colo.
Dorothy Mae Hart was born Feb. 15, 1922, on the family farm in Grove Township, Humboldt County, Iowa to Clyde and Blanche (Nordschow) Hart. She graduated from Humboldt High in 1939, having been awarded a scholarship to Drake University (Des Moines) with one of her short stories. After two years she transferred to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she earned a teacher's certificate in English.
Dorothy taught at Le Mars High School in the fall of 1945.
She was united in marriage to Larry J. Meis Jan. 13, 1946, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. They were married for 48 years and had six children: Betsy, Mike, Mary, Matt, Anne and Jeanne. Following the death of her husband Nov. 3, 1994, she moved to an independent living community in Arvada, Colo.
Dorothy made many friends wherever she went.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker.
She was involved in Catholic Daughters, League of Women Voters and a bible study club. She loved to go for coffee and visit with friends and neighbors.
She will be remembered for her positive, spunky outlook on life, her love of music, her sweet smile and twinkling blue eyes.
Survivors include her children: Betsy and Larry Austin of Ventura, Calif., Michael and Connie Meis of Naperville, Ill., Mary and Neil Eckhoff of Arvada, Colo., Matthew Meis of Omaha, Neb., Anne Knupfer of Lafayette, Ind., and Dr. Jeanne Meis of Houston, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Larry and a sister, Florence Kimball.
Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends, followed by the rosary at 4 p.m. and a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Matt Hewitt officiating. Dorothy will be laid to rest in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars.
A memorial fund has been established in her name to benefit her great grandson, Eli Eckhoff, who has autism (make to Eli Eckhoff Donation Fund) OR a contribution to the American Cancer Society.
