MERRILL, Iowa -- Arthur N. Holtz, 86, of Merrill passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Roger Madden as the officiant. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, with family present beginning at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Arthur was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Doon, Iowa, to Arthur Charles and Fayth (Norton) Holtz. He started working for area farmers at the age of 13.

On Sept. 10, 1944, Arthur married Deloris Eva Richards in Sioux City. They lived in the Hinton and Merrill area, where he worked for various farmers. In 1945, he managed a farm by Hinton for eight years before moving to Mapleton, Iowa to continue farming for the next 11 years. The family returned to the Hinton area in 1970, where Arthur farmed before moving to Merrill in 1989, where he continued to help area farmers.

Arthur enjoyed refurbishing old Farmall tractors with his son, playing cards, and attending machinery and cattle auctions and farm sales. During his later years, he enjoyed the company of his grandchildren.

Arthur is survived by his children, Arthur "Butch" Holtz and his wife, Bonnie of Merrill, Sandra Alberts and her husband, Daniel of Sioux City, Barbara Newton and her husband, Wayne of Decatur, Texas, Susan Schroeder and her husband, Sam of Wayne, Neb., and Patty Bengtson of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; special nephew, Dustin Holtz; friend of the family, Jerry Armstrong of Walker, Minn.; brothers and sisters, Harlan (Vicki) Holtz of Sioux Falls, S.D., Jim (Delphine) Holtz of Rochester, Minn., Marvin (Brenda) Holtz of Moville, Iowa, Louis Holtz of Sioux City, Jon Holtz of Merrill, Betty Elf of South Sioux City, Darlene Vick and Judy Diller of Litchfield, Minn., Carol (Dan) Gazinski of Omaha, Janet Doyle and Mary Jane Norton of Sioux City; sisters-in-law, Darlene Solomon of Sioux City and Donna Holtz of Merrill; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Deloris; four brothers, Bob, Joe, Dale, and Melvin; son-in-law, Roger Bengtson; and two grandchildren, Tami Bengtson and Suzanne Schroeder.

Casketbearers for the service will be Gary Holtz, Scott Holtz, Dennis Holtz, Brent Bengtson, Randy Alberts, and Billy Henderson. Honorary casketbearers will be Laurie Holtz, Brandye Jumps, Lisa Alberts DeLeon, Sherry Gross, Katie Henderson, Shanna Hintz, Shawn Moser, Shelli Huggenberger and Cari Catania.
