Mary O. Smith, 72, of Akron, IA,
died on Sunday, October 25,1998 at
the Akron City Convalescent Care
Center following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday,
October 27, 1998, at Wesley United
Methodist Church in Akron with
Pastor Marion Sindt officiating. Interment
was in Riverside Cemetery
in Akron. Schroeder Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Dennis Smith,
Tim, Smith, Charles Downing, Lily
Ronfeldt, Emma Mann, Anita Corn,
Connie Skou, Maxine Hamann.
Organist was Kathleen Knight
with Bob Brown as soloist.

Mrs. Smith was born June 11,
1926, in Moville, Iowa, the daughter
of George and Etta Downing.

She graduated from Oto High
School in 1945. She enjoyed playing
basketball and the violin in the
school orchestra.

Mrs. Smith was employed at the
Sioux City Battery from 1946 to
1948.

She married Virgil J. Smith on
January 5, 1948. After their wedding,
they lived on a farm south east of Akron.
They moved to O’Neil, NE in 1954
where they lived for one year.

They moved back to their farm
in Akron where Mary and Virgil
lived until Mary entered the Akron
City Convalescent Care Center in
May of 1998.

She was a lifelong farm wife,
member of the American Legion Post
#651 of Oto, IA, and the Wesley
United Methodist Church of Akron.

Mary is survived by her husband;
two sons and their wives Dennis and
Diane Smith of Akron, IA, and Tim
and Barbara Smith of Westfield, N.C.;
one daughter and her husband
Connie and Don Skou of Aurelia, IA;
twelve grandchildren, Brian Skou,
Jerad, Justin, Jaclyn, Ashley, Brandt,
Colin, Dylan, Eric, Freeman, Graham,
and Grace Smith; one brother,
Charles O. Downing of Sergeant
Bluff, IA; four sisters, Maxine
Hamann of Mapleton, IA, Lilly Mae
Ronfeldt of Sioux City IA, Emma
Mann of Hoskins, NE, Anita Corn of
Fremont, NE; several nieces and
nephews.

She was preceded in death by her
parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
