Helen H. Bottjen, 81, of rural Remsen, died Sunday, April 11, 2010, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Helen Hilda Bottjen, the daughter of Marie Catherine (Erichsen) and Frank Arnold Maass, was born Sept. 7, 1928, on the family farm near Remsen. She attended the Remsen #2 country school, and graduated from Remsen High School in 1945. Helen furthered her education at Western Union College, and received her teaching certificate in 1946. She taught at the Remsen #5 country school.
On June 4, 1947, Helen was united in marriage to George A. Bottjen at the Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. They lived and farmed in the Remsen area.
Helen served the Lord throughout her life, and offered her time and talents when teaching Sunday school, making banners, singing in the choir, and serving in the various women's organizations. Helen enjoyed quilting, bird watching, gardening and rug making, and was the secretary/treasurer of the Northwest Iowa Angus Association. She was employed for approximately 10 years in the activity department at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.
Helen is survived by her three children, Linda and Dean Mohning of Remsen, Karen and Bob Hoyt of Marion, and Dan and Katherine Bottjen of Manteo, N.C.; her sister, Ruth Anderson of Le Mars; her two brothers, Elmer and Alma Maass of Remsen and Wayne and Judith Maass of Calumet; her sister-in-law, Judy Maass of Winterset; her eight grandchildren, Rachel (Thad) Doty, Sarah (Jamie) Ham, Mark Mohning, Casey Hoyt, Tyler Hoyt, Audrey Bottjen, Julie Bottjen and Philip (Nikki) Larson-Bottjen; her five great-grandchildren, Taylor and Paige Doty, Garrett and Reagan Ham and Ezekiel Larson-Bottjen; and numerous other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Bottjen in 1987; her parents, Frank and Marie Maass; her sister, Dorothy Robinson; her brother, Roy Maass; her brothers-in-law, Glen Robinson and Burton Anderson; and her sister-in-law, Faye Maass.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus, with the Rev. Don Meyer officiating. Interment will be in the Remsen City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday), at Earnest-Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at the church Thursday, one hour prior to Helen's service.
