Susan D. Johnson, 47, of rural Le Mars, died Sunday, April 11, 2010, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by family and her best friend.
Susan Debra Schlesser was born Dec. 19, 1962, in Le Mars, the daughter of Robert and Ruby (Adank) Schlesser. She was raised on the family farm near Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1981.
Susan was united in marriage to Chuck Johnson Feb. 20, 1982, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Sue and Chuck farmed in Grant Township northwest of Le Mars. They were blessed with two daughters, Melanie and Megan. Her children where the "light of her life."
Sue loved to spend time with Chuck and the girls, as well as treasured her time with other family and friends. She loved to go walking, help with farm work, gardening, and just loved to work outside. Sue also enjoyed ceramics, reading, and watching reality television shows. She enjoyed cooking, shopping with family and friends and caring for the family dogs and cats, especially her cat, Socks.
Survivors include her husband of 28 years, Chuck of Le Mars; two daughters, Melanie and Megan Johnson of Iowa City; her parents, Robert and Ruby Schlesser of Maurice; her brothers and sisters: Mark (Shelly) Schlesser of Le Mars, Donna (Larry) Huss of Hartington, Neb., Randy Schlesser of Le Mars, Bob (Lori) Schlesser of Le Mars, and Jerry (Terry) Schlesser of Dutton, Mont.; a brother-in-law, Bob (Sharon) Johnson of Le Mars; several nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Kathy Rollins of Le Mars who helped to make the last 15 years possible; and a dear friend, Sheri Johnson.
Sue was preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry and Hilda Schlesser and David and Alvina Adank; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Melvin and Lois Johnson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Interment will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Craig. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) with the family present after 5 p.m. to greet friends followed by a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service, all at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will continue Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Kruse, Tim Osterberg, Mike Rollins, Dave TenNapel, Matt Schlesser, Josh Schlesser, Jason Schlesser, Jamie Huss, and Matthew Johnson.
