Arlene VanVoorst, 81, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.
Arlene Rae VanVoorst was born Dec. 26, 1927, in Adaville, the daughter of Vernon and Winefred (Hoffman) Morehead. She attended Adaville School.
On May 29, 1945 Arlene and Gerrit John VanVoorst were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The couple made their home in Minnesota for a brief time before returning to Le Mars.
Arlene, John and their children moved to Seney, where they lived for many years. John died suddenly Jan. 5, 1979.
Arlene worked as a caretaker and assisted many people in their homes. She also did babysitting for many families in the area.
Arlene enjoyed cooking and baking, playing bingo, rummage sales and working crossword puzzles. One of her proudest moments was winning an award in the Betty Crocker cooking contest. If asked, Arlene always has the answer to complete a crossword puzzle. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and would always find a way to have the last word.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses: Dale VanVoorst, Cheryl Quintero, Ken and Marilyn VanVoorst, all of Le Mars, Ron and Judy VanVoorst of Dakota City, Neb., and Allen "Dick" and Caroline VanVoorst of Rodney; 10 grandchildren: James and Brandi VanVoorst, Jeremiah VanVoorst, Lindsey and Alonso VanVoorst Hernandez, Christina VanVoorst, Corrine and Aaron Heaton, Callie and Tony Port, Becky and Alan Weeder, Teresa and Bob Blake, Joshua and Mindy VanVoorst, and Ann VanVoorst, and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerrit John VanVoorst; a great-grandson Jonathan VanVoorst; and a brother Dwight.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. Pastor Joshua Hansen will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, rural Le Mars. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at the funeral home and will continue until the funeral service.
