Verna C. Groepper, 83, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at her residence in rural Kingsley.

Verna was born Aug. 9, 1926, in Hinton, the daughter of Henry and Clara (Larson) Vehe. On Dec. 31, 1946, she married Loren Groepper at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. Loren and Verna have made their home in rural Kingsley since the spring of 1970.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Kingsley and Leah Circle.

Verna was a loving wife and mother. She was always working, never taking a day off. She loved to cook and sew.

She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Loren, sons Gary (Shyla) Groepper and David (Darcy) Groepper both of Kingsley; daughters Donna (Dennis) Hoss of Yankton, S.D., Dianne (Shelton) Mack of Mitchell, S.D., and Patty Berkenpas and special friend Tim Koopman of Le Mars; grandchildren Jan (Chad) Pickner of Sioux City, Carin (Brian) Huber of Yankton, S.D., Wendi Henglefelt of Mitchell, S.D., Justin Mack and special friend Ashley Vetch of Mitchell, S.D., Mark, Brett and Danielle Groepper of Kingsley, Denae (Matt) Erickson of Granger, Abbie Groepper and special friend Tim Susie of Kingsley, Stephanie Groepper of Puyallup, Wash., Craig Berkenpas and special friend Trista Ludwig and Mike (Becky) Berkenpas of Le Mars; great-grandchildren Alex Slagle and Sam Huber both of Yankton, S.D., Madelynn Henglefelt of Mitchell, S.D., Clarissa Groepper of Puyallup, Wash., Dax Erickson of Granger, and Karson Ludwig of Le Mars; stepgreat-grandchildren, Chase Huber of Yankton, S.D., Brayden Paskert, Kennedy and Kole Ludwig, all of Le Mars. Also a sister Velma Payne of Red Oak; sisters-in-law Edna Dunne, Kathleen Groepper, Esther Groepper and Alice Shanahan, and many nieces and nephews.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; a son Steven Groepper; a grandson Spc. Chad Groepper; a son-in-law Doug Berkenpas; a great-granddaughter Claire Pickner; sisters, Alta Derocher, Dorothy Cote, and Mary Trometer; a brother Ervin Vehe; sisters-in-law Viola Berding, Mable Groepper, and Lillie Nestor and brothers-in-law Ernest, Harry, Walter, Clarence, Alvin and Kenneth Groepper.

Funeral service were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at First Lutheran Church in Kingsley with burial at Kingsley Cemetery. A prayer service was held at the church at 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation was Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. Arrangements were made under the direction of Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley.

The family wishes to extend many thanks to Hospice of Siouxland for their loving care of Verna.
