Kenneth "Ken" Small, 90, of Akron, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at Countryside Senior Living in Sioux City.
Kenneth Avery Small was born Feb. 1, 1919, in Akron, Plymouth County, the son of Avery and Grace (Stinton) Small. He was baptized at First Baptist Church in Akron. He attended school at Sayles in Union County, S.D., and also in Akron. Following his education, he helped his father with his ice delivery business and later with his trucking business.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn Baldwin March 3, 1942, in Pender, Neb. Shortly after their marriage, Ken was inducted into the United States Army on March 24, 1942 and served his country during World War II. He attained the rank of staff sergeant with the 2509th AAF Base Unit. Following his honorable discharge Nov. 30, 1945, he returned to Akron. Ken went to work for Ray Jespersen, driving a gasoline transport for over 20 years. Later, he went to work with the Plymouth County Secondary Roads Department as a heavy equipment operator for many years. After retiring, he continued to work for the department part time for a few years.
He and Evelyn enjoyed living on their acreage near Akron. For the past two years, Ken and Evelyn have resided at Countryside Senior Living in Sioux City.
Ken was a member of First Baptist Church in Akron. He was also a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron.
Ken will be remembered for mechanical abilities, fixing or designing just about anything. He also enjoyed campers, racing of any kind, listening to music, and watching western movies. But most of all, he loved the times spent visiting with family and friends.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of more than 67 years, Evelyn of Sioux City; his daughter: Valerie Malenosky and her husband Mike of Sioux City; nine grandchildren: Stacey Elam and husband Bobby of Broken Arrow, Okla., and their children, Austin, Hailey, and Tristin; Shane Burt of South Sioux City, Neb., and his children, Sara and Domonique; Jeremey Malenosky and his wife Kristen of Sioux City, and their children, Tyler, Zachary, Alycen, and Jacob; Jeanelle Timp of Le Mars, and her children, Mitchell, Michael, and Bryce; Timothy Malenosky of Sioux City, Michelle Burton and her husband Kyle of Sioux City, and their daughter, Kayla; Justin Malenosky of Sioux City; Joshua "Bubba" Malenosky and his wife Megan of Sioux City; and Ashley Goforth and her husband James of Kinsley, Kan., and their children, Tyler, Brice, and Kaden; five brothers: Roscoe Small and his wife Evelyn of Le Mars; Clinton "Buck" Small and his wife Kay of Dunlap, Ill.; Fay Small of Weatherford, Texas; Jim Small and his wife Edie of Akron; and Gayland Small and his wife Selma of Akron; a sister: Ramona Govig of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Doyle Small and Barry "Archie" Small; a daughter: Joceyle Baker; five brothers: William, Ivyl, Eldon, Vernard, and Clayton "Murph" Small; and three sisters: Vernice Blum, Wilma Baldwin, and Karen Small.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Akron. Pastor Mike Avery will officiate. Burial with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present after 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at First Baptist Church in Akron.
