Elizabeth "Betty" A. Nitzschke, 83 of Sioux City, formerly of Remsen, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at Countryside Senior Living.

Betty was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Yankton, S.D., the daughter of Adolph and Helen (Ulmer) Frasch. She graduated from Remsen High School with the Class of 1944 and continued her education at Morningside College for an additional year.

She married Lester Nitzschke in Nashua at the Little Brown Church Sept. 6, 1947; to this union four children were born.

Betty was a master at knitting and counted cross-stitching. She had a weed-free yard she kept by hand-picking the weeds, along with keeping a spotless garden. Betty loved animals and had a reputation in Remsen of removing snakes from neighbors' basements when asked, and she would drive the snakes to the country to release them, unharmed.

Betty is survived by her children, Candy Simms and her husband Bill of Silverthorne, Colo., Gene Nitzschke and his wife Mary of Sioux City, Linda Nitzschke of Sioux City, and Art Nitzschke of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sisters Carolyn Eichhorn of Rock Island, Ill., Doris Ehlert and her husband DeWayne of Stockton, Calif., and Margaret Bunjes of Le Mars; five grandchildren Sarah, Adam and Steven Nitzschke, and Mike and Kristin Simms; and 13 nieces and nephews, including a special goddaughter, Tami Marek, of Shoreview, Minn.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lester in 1988, brother F.W. Frasch, brothers-in-law Milton Eichhorn and Heino Bunjes, and nephew Steve Bunjes.

Abiding by Betty's wishes, donation to the University of South Dakota has been made and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Those wishing to offer a memorial may do so to Hospice of Siouxland in Sioux City. Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
