BRUNSVILLE, Iowa -- Herman Ommo Wilken, 75, of Brunsville died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville, with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post 724 of Brunsville. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
Mr. Wilken was born May 16, 1926, in Le Mars, the son of Frerich and Theresa (Redelfs) Wilken. He was raised and educated in the Brunsville area and graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army as a finance clerk from 1944 to 1946, with the 5th Infantry in the European Theater. Following his discharge, he returned to the Brunsville area.
He married Jean Harms on Sept. 14, 1960, in Brunsville. The couple made their home in Brunsville. He was employed with First State Bank, now known as Prairie State Bank, in Brunsville for 45 years, retiring in 1999. His wife died March 13, 1987.
He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, American Legion Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post 724. He had served as mayor of Brunsville for 23 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Lori Wilken of Le Mars; a son and his wife, David and Lisa of Bellevue, Neb.; two grandsons, Tyler and Ryan Wilken; a brother and his wife, Elmer and Peggy of Brunsville; and several nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John.
