Herman A. Miller, 90, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Herman Andrew Miller was born May 8, 1915, on the family farm in Marcus Township, Cherokee County, to Peter L. and Kristine (Sandbek) Miller. He was baptized and confirmed at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Marcus. Herman graduated from Marcus High School in 1933 and later attended Diesel Mechanic classes in Chicago, Ill.

On November 9, 1937 Herman and Verna Marion Lund were united in marriage at the Nazareth Lutheran Church parsonage in Marcus. The couple made their home on a farm in Fredonia Township, Plymouth County.

Herman was a progressive farmer that was one of the first to utilize conservation practices. He and his family were members of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Oyens were Herman held many offices and taught Sunday School. They retired from farming in 1976 and moved to Le Mars. Verna died on Aug. 29, 1987.

Herman married Charlotte Magdeline (Gothier) Borchers on Jan. 11, 1989, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She died Jan. 9, 2001. Herman moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars in November 2003.

Herman was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He was also a member of Kiwanis and a 50-year member of Farm Bureau. He volunteered as a Peer Helper and with Meals on Wheels. Herman enjoyed woodworking, card playing, and most of all, time spent with his family.

He will be lovingly remembered by daughter Linda Chapman and her husband. Dan of Meriden, and their children Julie (Bob) DeYoung and Joyce (David) Rydstrom; daughter Janet Matz and her husband, Rodney of Hawarden, Iowa and their children Tina (Harry) Gray, Tim (Tracy) Matz and Randy (Bobbi) Matz; son the Rev. Curtis Miller and his wife Sharyl of Cottonwood, Minn., and their children Eric (Dawn) Miller, Nathan (Sarah) Miller and Paul (Marie) Miller; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Verna; wife Charlotte; seven brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services will held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 12 noon Sunday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
