McCOOK LAKE, S.D. -- Marlo Clayton Waterbury, 79, of McCook Lake passed away unexpectedly Friday, Aug. 29, 2003.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Laurice Streyffeier officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Akron. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Marlo was born June 21, 1924, on his parents' farm in rural Union County, S.D. He was the son of Albert and Minnie (Kaelke) Waterbury. Marlo graduated from Akron High School in 1942. He joined the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946.

On April 20, 1947, Marlo married Jean I. Anderson of Hawarden, Iowa. Marlo had been a farmer, construction worker, taxidermist and small business owner. He was a local and family historian. He was also an avid bottle and antique collector. In 1983, the Sioux City Museum and Historical Association named him "Collector of the Year." Marlo also loved being outdoors. He spent his time hunting, fishing and collecting just about anything that he could find.

He was an active member of Union County Historical Society, of which he was the vice president. He was also a member of the American Legion, Nebraska Antique Bottle Collectors, Redwing Stoneware Collectors and Fort Dodge Stoneware Collectors. Marlo's other love was spending time with his wife, his children, his grandchildren and extended family. Whether he was teaching his outdoor skills or sharing family history, Marlo enjoyed his time surrounded by his loved ones.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; a son, Mark of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Don Fuxa of McCook Lake; grandchildren, Molly Krivohlavek and her husband, Seth of Elkhorn, Neb., Daniel Fuxa and Barbie Fuxa of McCook Lake; nieces and nephews, Audrey and Keith Seamonds of LaSalle, Mich., Floyd Jr. and Sharon Waterbury of Akron, Joyce Smith of Akron, Sandy and Marlin Osterbuhr of Akron, Beth and Dale Sykes of Helena, Mich., Larry Waterbury of Sioux City, Janiece Waterman of Hawarden, Iowa, Joan Coleman of Akron, and Fay "Babe" Waterbury of Wichita, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Minnie; his brothers, Fay and Floyd; nephews, Marlin Waterbury and Kervin Waterbury; several aunts and uncles; and his daughter-in-law, Rose Ann Waterbury.

Pallbearers will be Larry Waterbury, Randy Waterbury, Richard "Sam" Waterbury, Christopher Waterbury, Donald "Pete" Peters and Dewain Fravel.
