Maynard "Jinx" Braband, 95, of Le Mars, died Friday, June 12, 2009 at The Abbey in Le Mars.

Maynard Harry Braband was born Oct. 30, 1913, on the family farm in Stanton Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of August and Grace (De Boer) Braband. Jinx, as he was known by many, attended country school in Plymouth County. Following his education, he helped his father on the farm and later was a farm hand for area farmers.

He was united in marriage to Frances Weber Aug. 27, 1940, in Le Mars. They moved to Minnesota for a year, helping his father on the farm. They returned to Le Mars and Jinx helped his in-laws on the their farm in America Township until taking over the farming operation. They continued to farm for many years. In 1963, they retired and moved to Le Mars.

The couple wintered in Florida for many years and later made their home in Daytona Beach for eight years. In 1982, they moved back to Le Mars. For the past 8 months, he had been a resident of the Abbey.

Jinx was very proud of his faith. Early in his life, he was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at St. John Evangelical Church in Le Mars. Later, he was actively involved during its transition period to St. John Evangelical Reformed Church and eventually to Presbyterian United Church of Christ. He and Frances are members of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sioux City. While living in Florida, Jinx was active in the Lion's Club.

In his early years, he enjoyed hunting. He also enjoyed playing cards and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jinx's life was always farming, even after retirement; he would help his son wherever needed. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of more than 68 years, Frances of Le Mars; a son: Lloyd Braband and his wife Kathy of rural Le Mars; three grandsons: Russ Mercer and his daughters, Dielle and Miranda of Topeka, Kan., Jerry McVeigh and Jim McVeigh of Young America, Minn.; a brother, Don Braband and his wife Mabel of Balaton, Minn.; three sisters, Edith Armstrong of California, Sylvia Johnson of Balaton, Minn., and Lou Galbraith and her husband Bob of Balaton, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
