LE MARS, Iowa -- Rosemary L. Phipps, 86, of Le Mars passed away Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Services will be 10 a.m Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James J. Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Friday, with the entire family present at 5 to 7 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer and rosary service at 7 p.m., all at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Rosemary Lucille Pinto was born Nov. 2, 1915, in Sioux City, the daughter of Dr. Walter A. and Rose Mary (Lazure) Pinto. She was raised in the Sioux City area. She later attended Briar Cliff College and graduated from Clarke College, magna cum laude, with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. Following her education, she moved to California to live with a family friend.

She met Swede Phipps, who was in the U.S. Navy at the time. They were united in marriage on Sept. 2, 1940, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Sioux City until moving to Le Mars in 1944. She was a homemaker until her last child started school, she then worked at various jobs before beginning her employment with the Iowa Department of Social Services. She worked as a caseworker until her retirement in 1980. On April 4, 2002, She moved to Brentwood Good Samaritan Center. She found comfort in the Christian atmosphere and care that she received.

She was a devout member of St. James Catholic Church, St. James Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary and various craft clubs. She enjoyed traveling to visit friends, making crafts, attending craft shows, baking, crocheting, knitting and quilting for the joy and comfort of others.

She is survived by her eight children, Walter and his wife, Darla, of Des Moines, Kathy Odell of San Diego, Calif., Paula Phipps of Chicago, Gordon of Le Mars, James and his wife, Flo, of Silverdale, Wash., Richard and his wife, Jan, of Omaha, Rose Smith and her husband, Mike, of Spokane, Wash., and Teresa Daniels and her husband, Earl ,of Baltimore, Md.; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Vornbrock; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her legacy of love continues through her children, her friends and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Swede; a brother, Walter; and a son-in-law, John Odell.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Brentwood Good Samaritan Center.
