REMSEN, Iowa -- Ed Niehus, 84, of Remsen died Friday, July 26, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Niehus was born April 21, 1918, in rural Remsen, the son of Bernard and Katherine (Dietermann) Niehus. He was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen, graduating in 1936. He then engaged in farming with his parents. In 1941, he attended and graduated from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, after which, he returned to Remsen and resumed farming with his parents.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from June 11, 1942, until his discharge Jan. 14, 1946. He again returned to Remsen and resumed farming.

On Feb. 22, 1949, he married Beatrice Hagen in Sioux City. They made their home near Remsen, where they engaged in farming. Beatrice died Nov. 16, 1976. He retired and moved into Remsen in 1984. He had been a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center since April 29, 2002.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Luxembourg Brotherhood and served on the Plymouth County Board of Review for several years.

Survivors include three sons, Dennis of Remsen, Larry and his wife, Jana of Sioux City, and Paul of Chipita Park, Colo.; three grandchildren, Nathan and his wife, Candy Niehus of Salem, Ore., Nicole Niehus of Chicago, and Aaron Niehus of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother and his wife, Walter and Rita of Le Mars, Iowa; and three sisters-in-law, Wilma Jochum of Colorado Springs, Colo., Patty Niehus of San Bernardino, Calif., and Marcella Niehus of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Rosemary Marie; and four brothers, Cletus, Raymond, Gilbert and LeRoy.
