Everild was born Dec. 5, 1912, in rural Remsen, the son of Charles and Josephine (Foster) Niehus. He was raised and educated in Remsen. He worked on a farm in Remsen and shared fond memories of his times in the Remsen area. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and was assigned to the USS Oklahoma in 1940. He was a gunners mate aboard the Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, when it was capsized. He was honorably discharged in 1943.

He married Alberta Kinney on June 20, 1944. The couple moved from the Iowa farm to Pipestone in 1957, where they raised their family. He was employed as a janitor in the Pipestone schools and retired in the early 1990s. They moved into the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in November 1996, where Mrs. Niehus still resides.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was the most avid Yankee baseball fan and followed the team to the end. He loved life and will be deeply missed, but ever present in our memories, thoughts and prayers.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Alberta of Remsen, whom he fondly called "teacher"; three sons and their wives, Wayne and Carmen of Concord, Calif., Bill and Allyson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dean and Annette of Eagan, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Donna Niehus of Pipestone; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved son, Don; five sisters, Rose Wyler, Teresa Kestel, Agness Cook, Cora Murray and Eda Gengler; two brothers, Andrew and William; and a special nephew, Clark Cook.
