Emma Barbara Borke was born Feb. 21, 1914, to Fred and Theophila (Tochalke) Borke, in Athens, Wis. She grew up on the family farm outside of Athens and attended school there. During the war years, she worked as a waitress in Detroit, Mich. It was there that she met Roy Nielsen.

She was always an avid gardener of produce and flowers and loved to cook and bake. Playing cards was a favorite pastime and she took pleasure in playing with her family and friends. She was always an enthusiastic baseball fan and listened to the Sioux City Explorers on the radio.

She took great pride in her grandchildren, Luke and his wife, Melea, and Erin and her friend, Nick Mathistad, and looked forward to the birth of her great-grandchild.
