AKRON, Iowa -- Lavina Newman, 100, of Akron died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Akron City Convalescent Care Center.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, with Monsignor Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, Iowa. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time today at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Mrs. Newman was born March 14, 1903, in rural Westfield, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Bridgett (Foley) Hoffman. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Akron.

She married Howard Morehead on Sept. 10, 1919. He preceded her in death June 1963. She married Henry R. Newman on May 23, 19, 1939. He preceded her in death May 30, 1976.

She was employed at Westfield, Iowa school, where she served as a cook. She also was employed at the cafe in Westfield.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Ladies of St. Joseph and Golden Age Club. In her free time, she loved to play cards and crochet, giving 22 afghans away to the Ladies Guild of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Arlene Morehead of Akron; four grandchildren, Pat Silhacek of Akron, Terry Morehead of Westfield, Susan Mann of Alta, Iowa, and Lance Morehead of Cherokee, Iowa; two stepgrandsons, Losen Newman of Dakota City and Donald Gene Newman of Port Angles, Wash.; 13 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; a son, Lowell Morehead; a daughter, Ardis Yates Peters; and a stepgrandson, Lendol Newman.

Pallbearers will be Kevin, Kyle and Kerry Hombs, Steve Schuster and Scott, Lance and Terry Morehead. Honorary pallbearers will be Eric and Josh Mann and Jeff Morehead.
