AKRON, Iowa -- Emma B. Nielsen, 89, of Akron passed away Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Curtis Matson officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Emma Barbara Borke was born Feb. 21, 1914, to Fred and Theophila (Tochalke) Borke, in Athens, Wis. She grew up on the family farm outside of Athens and attended school there. During the war years, she worked as a waitress in Detroit, Mich. It was there that she met Roy Nielsen.
She married Roy M. Nielsen on Sept. 4, 1943, in Athens. They made their first home in Detroit, where they both worked at a defense plant. In 1945, the couple moved to Akron, where they owned and operated Nielsen's Service. She continued to work as a bookkeeper until her retirement at the service station.
She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. For many years, she enjoyed bowling on a league in Akron. She was always an avid gardener of produce and flowers and loved to cook and bake. Playing cards was a favorite pastime and she took pleasure in playing with her family and friends. She was always an enthusiastic baseball fan and listened to the Sioux City Explorers on the radio.
She took great pride in her grandchildren, Luke and his wife, Melea, and Erin and her friend, Nick Mathistad, and looked forward to the birth of her great-grandchild.
She is survived by a son and his wife, Bob and Linda Nielsen of Akron; a grandson and his wife, Luke and Melea Nielsen of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Erin Nielsen of Akron; a sister-in-law, Mary Borke of Athens, Wis.; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Melvin and Lois Nielsen of Akron and Howard and Shirley Nielsen of Daltham, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Anna, Alexandria, Martha and Eleanor; and four brothers, Bill, Rudy, Edwin and Fred.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Nielsen, Merlin Nielsen, Norman Nielsen, Roger Nielsen, Loren Nielsen and Lawrence Maynard.
