Arlene McHale, 86, of Craig, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Arlene Emilie Schulz was born Feb. 2, 1923, on the family farm south of Craig, the daughter of Herman and Emilie (Onken) Schulz. Arlene was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church at Craig. She attended country school near her home.

Arlene was united in marriage to Wm. Henry McHale on Jan. 30, 1946.

Arlene was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church. As a young lady, she participated in Luther League and Sunday School. She belonged to the women's circle and sang in the choir for more than 60 years. She also cleaned the church for many years.

She worked at the Craig Post Office for 35 years, retiring in 2000.

Her husband, Wm. Henry McHale died Jan. 10, 1978.

Arlene enjoyed her ladies card club, bowling, attending dances, and growing flowers. She enjoyed visits and telephone calls from family and friends. Her greatest joy was her family, she treasured the visits from grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Dennis McHale and his wife Jan of Hastings, Neb., and Jolene Liston and her husband Greg of Ireton; three grandchildren, Stacy Bierman and her husband David of Hastings, Neb., Seth Liston and his wife Angela of Wayne, Neb., and Jacob Liston and his wife Angela of Ireton; six great-grandchildren, Kiernan Bierman, Justine Bierman, Aiden Liston, Zander Liston, Dylan Liston, and Addison Liston; a brother, Herman Schulz and his wife Marlene of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Virginia Schulz of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Emilie (Onken) Schulz; her husband, Wm. Henry McHale; two brothers, Kenneth Schulz and his wife Mildred and Melvin Schulz; two sisters, Helen Hartman and her husband Alfred and Gladys Ahrendt and her husband Bennie; and a sister-in-law, Helen Schulz.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Craig, with the Rev. Barbara Hansen officiating. Interment will be at the St. John Evangelical Cemetery. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitations will continue Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
