LE MARS, Iowa -- Mark R. Masuen, 53, of Le Mars died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Revs. James Tiegges and William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars, with military rites conducted by American Legion Wasmer Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mark Raymond Masuen was born Jan. 24, 1950, in Le Mars, the son of Richard N. and Celesta M. (Shearon) Masuen. He attended Gehlen Catholic School, graduating in 1968. Following high school he attended Westmar College. In 1969 he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Seattle, Wash., aboard the USS Vireo MSC 205. He was honorably discharged in 1974 and obtained the rank of petty officer second class.

Upon his return to Le Mars, he was employed by Fritz Thoma at Le Mars Plumbing and Heating. In June 1976, he began his career with the Plymouth County Secondary Roads Department. In the 27 years he worked for the county, he had worked on the bridge crew, grading crew and for the last four years as the parts manager until his health no longer allowed him to continue working.

He was united in marriage to Vikki Wessels on April 23, 1977, in Le Mars. He was blessed with three children, Nick, Brad and Matt.

He treasured the time spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed woodworking, working outdoors, remodeling his home, motorcycles, watching college and pro football games and playing pool. He was a member of American Legion Wasmer Post 241.

Survivors include his wife, Vikki of Le Mars; three sons, Nick of Le Mars, Brad of Ames, Iowa, and Matt of Des Moines; his parents, Richard and Celesta Masuen of Le Mars; a sister and her husband, Becky and Bob Scheitler of Le Mars; a brother, Mike of Des Moines; his mother-in-law, Maxene Wessels of Le Mars; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Linda and Jim Lehrman, Kris and Ron Harvey and Denise and Curt Uden, all of Le Mars; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles in 1968; maternal and paternal grandparents, John and Vera Shearon Sr. and Charles and Lena Masuen; father-in-law, Armin Wessels; and a brother-in-law, Steve Reinholdt.

Pallbearers will be Denny Masuen, Ray Wilkens, Dick Ruether, Dan Ruhland, Kyle Gengler and Rich Sudtelgte.
