REMSEN, Iowa -- Dennis M. Klein, 59, of San Francisco, Calif., formerly of Remsen, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Veterans Hospital in San Francisco following a lengthy illness of cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Klein was born June 4, 1942, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Melinda (Plathe) Klein. He was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1970, stationed in San Diego, Calif., and transferred to the USS Tripoli during the Vietnam War. After his discharge he moved to San Francisco, where he spent most of his remaining life and worked as a professional interior painter in the San Francisco area.

He married Debbie Bartholomew on Dec. 28, 1975, in San Francisco, where they made their home.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sheri Klein and Theresa Klein, both of San Francisco; a son, Dennis Jr. of San Francisco; five brothers, Elmer and his wife, Jan, Malcolm, Donald and his wife, Marlene, Alan and his wife, Lorelei, and Charles, all of Remsen; nine sisters, Mavis Kunkel, Carol and her husband, Donald Ruba, Susan and her husband, Al Vaske, Marilyn Treinen and Marlys Ohlendorf, all of Remsen, Nancy and her husband, Rick Loehr of Enid, Okla., Elaine and her husband, Fred Jungers of Sheldon, Iowa, Alice Klein and Norma Klein, both of Stafford, Texas; a sister-in-law and her husband, Gerianne and George Olson of Sioux City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas; maternal grandparents, Ben and Johanna (Mousel) Plathe; paternal grandparents, Mike and Anna (Gehrens) Klein; and two brothers-in-law, Donald Kunkel and Fred Treinen.
