Georgia Sorgdrager

Georgia Sorgdrager, 84, of Merrill, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Georgia Mae Sorgdrager was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Sibley, the daughter of Robert Morgan and Anna Elizabeth (Redenius) Smith. She attended rural school near Remsen, and helped her parents raise her siblings along with assisting neighbors with housekeeping.

Georgia married Earl Sorgdrager on March 3, 1942, in Dakota City, Neb. The couple made their home in Riverside, Calif., while Earl served his country during World War II. Following the war, they returned to Iowa and lived at Struble, Ireton and Sioux City, prior to moving to Merrill in 1964. Georgia worked as a nurse's aide at Floyd Valley Hospital (the former Sacred Heart Hospital) in Le Mars for over 45 years. She lived in Merrill until the past year when she moved to Sioux City due to her failing health.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Le Mars.

Georgia was a caregiver to many. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends. Georgia also enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening and reading. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her son Earl Sorgdrager Jr. and his special friend, Alonna Schade of Merrill; a daughter, Patricia Zimmer and her husband, Don, of Sioux City; grandchildren Barb Sorgdrager and her special friend, Scott Jennings, Rob Sorgdrager and his wife, Dawn, Tina Sorgdrager, Anita Burquist and her husband, Curt, and Anthony Sorgdrager and his wife, Kari, Donielle Peck and her husband, Greg, Bill Zimmer and his wife, Tara, Sara Zimmer and her fiancé, Matt Morrow; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Brown of Akron and Jackie Reamer of Las Vegas, Nev.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl on Dec. 8, 1993; three sisters, Bernice Jacquez, Ann Peschon and Shirley Marienau; and five brothers Robert, Henry, Harvey, Gilbert, and David.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. Pastor Jason Larson of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the funeral home prior to the service on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Smith, Darwin Smith, Denny Lubben, Danny Peschon, Keith Sorgdrager and Brandon Marienau.
