Lyall K. Saunders, 91, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Schoop officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Saunders was born June 12, 1911, in O'Leary, Iowa, the son of William and Augusta (Roepke) Saunders.
He married Mildred Johnson on April 2, 1930, in Hinton, Iowa. They farmed from 1932 to 1933, then moved to Sioux City in 1934. He was then employed with B.F. Goodrich Co. He transferred to Omaha in 1941 and returned to Sioux City in 1946. In 1949, he entered into the petroleum business in Sioux City as founder of Saunders Oil Co. He owned and managed the company until his retirement in 1976, when he sold the business to his sons. Lyall will be missed by many.
He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, the Masonic Lodge and Sioux City Consistory.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Saunders of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Eugene and Gerri Saunders of Dakota Dunes, S.D., and Keith and Nettie Saunders of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Pat Saunders of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Stanley and Evelyn Saunders of Hinton, Iowa; a sister, Jennie Crahan of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Marcellene Saunders and Phyllis Greese; eight grandchildren, Todd, Troy, Dawn, Jeff and Tim Saunders, Renee Kenney, Patti Bleil and Justin Karmineke; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by eight brothers and a sister.
Pallbearers will be Joe Bleil, Justin Karmineke, Jeff Saunders, Bo Bleil, Todd Saunders and Matt Kenney.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
