SERGEANT BLUFF -- Marjorie M. Smith, 79, of Sergeant Bluff died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be 8 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Del Olivier of Augustana Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present, at the funeral home.
Marjorie M. Smith was born May 17, 1923, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Milo and Maude (Comar) Porterfield. She moved to Sioux City and attended Sioux City public schools.
She married William James Smith on Feb. 2, 1943, in Sioux City. He passed away in 1987 in Sioux City. After marriage, the couple moved to New York City for 10 years, then moved back to Sioux City. Marjorie worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 20 years, retiring in 1986.
She was a member of the U.S. Postal Carriers' Union. She enjoyed bingo, crocheting, playing cards and loved being with her dogs.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Smith of Sergeant Bluff; a sister, Evelyn Bernard of Jefferson, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Richard and Bud Porterfield.
