SIBLEY, Iowa -- Kathleen (Kay) Mildred (Hyink) Sol, 86, of Brookings, S.D., formerly of Sibley, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at United Retirement Center in Brookings.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Walton-Roste Funeral Home in Sibley.
Kathleen "Kay" Sol was born July 5, 1916, in LeMars, Iowa, the daughter of William and Luttie (McCorkel) Hyink. She attended one year of college at Westmar in LeMars, then three at the University of Nebraska, receiving a BS in education.
Kay married Kenneth Sol on May 31, 1939. In 1945 they moved to Sibley. In 1958 after all her children were in school, she returned to a profession she loved, teaching. She taught Secretarial Science and was Teacher Advisor for the Sibley yearbook, The General. In 1978 both Kay and Ken retired from teaching. They enjoyed traveling, especially by train. One of their goals was to visit all 50 states.
Kay was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Sibley and a member of P.E.O.
Kay is survived by three daughters, Beverly (Doug) Dale of Albuquerque, N.M., Patricia (Kerry) Erington of Overland Park, Kan. and Marilyn (Dennis) Gerjets of Brookings, S.D.; eight grandchildren, Alan (Pam) Knutson, Philip (Mandy) Knutson, Daniel (Connie) Gerjets, Kathleen Dale, Susan (Troy) Kraft, Cara (Andy) Negaard, Leah Dale and Nickalous Gerjets; and three great-grandchildren, Riley and Reed Knutson and Kiley Kraft.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; a son-in-law, Warren Knutson; a sister, Wilma Sack; and her brother, Don Hyink.
