KINGSLEY, Iowa -- Magdalena Ritchie, 96, of Kingsley died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa, with the Rev. Daniel Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with family present after 6 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ritchie was born Aug. 25, 1905, in the Nerchau, Saxony, Germany, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Hessel) Hettwer. She was baptized in Germany. At the age of 5 1/2, she immigrated to the United States with her parents and sister, Erna. They settled south of Remsen, Iowa. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Remsen.

She did domestic work in the Marcus, Iowa, area where she met her husband, Homer Ritchie. They were married May 23, 1924, in Sioux City. They farmed in the Marion Township. In 1928, they moved to a farm in Union Township where she lived until October 2001, when she because a resident of the Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center. She and Homer had three children, Eunice, Joe and Dale.

She was a member of Union Township Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed needlework, indoor gardening, and baking until she became ill in October 2001.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Joe and Wilma Ritchie of Kingsley; six grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Ted Hayden of Westfield, Iowa; her stepmother, Sadie Hettwer of Le Mars; four half sisters, Delores and her husband, Fred Hoxie, Carolene and her husband, Wilbur Petersen, Mary and her husband, Louie Luschen, and Kay Fiedler, all of Le Mars; four half brothers, Raymond of St. Louis, Mo., Richard Hettwer of Granite Falls, Ill., Robert and his wife, Marion Hettwer of Sioux Falls, and Ken and his wife, Shirley Hettwer of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter, Eunice Hayden; a son, Dale Ritchie; a grandson, Jim Ritchie; a great-granddaughter, Jill Mowry; a sister, Erna Ernst; and a half sister, Judy Dreckman.

Pallbearers will be Tim Lang, Joe Kessenich, Larry Ruchti, Clifford Ferrin, Roger Dempster and Ken Maass.
