George F. Stastny, 80, of Merrill, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at Indian Hills Nursing & Rehab Center in Sioux City, following a lengthy illness.
George F. Stastny was born Feb. 12, 1928, the son of Frank and Mary (Janacek) Stastny. George grew up on a farm in Liberty Township in Plymouth County and attended Liberty Consolidated School at rural Merrill. He attended Westmar College in Le Mars and graduated from Ames College (now Iowa State University) as an electrical engineer in 1948.
George worked in Washington, D.C. on government contracts for 10 years as an electrical engineer and then in Evanston, Ill., for 12 years. He returned to the family farm in Merrill in 1970.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars and enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include four cousins and their spouses, Anne Callahan of Lincoln, Neb., Mary Ellen Cook of Sioux City, George Stecha of Onalaska, Wis., and Vera Hammerwold of Huntington, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Vladimir.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Meyer Brother Colonial Chapel in Sioux City with the Rev. Jason Larson of United Methodist Church of Le Mars officitaing. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Robert Callahan, Joseph McNamara, Donald Newberg, Darrel Newberg, Dick Kovarna and Fred Sparr.
Memorials may be given his name to Hospice of Siouxland.
